Fondia’s Digi Project: what do we need to prepare for in the digitalization revolution?

Over the past few years, we at Fondia have been working on a digitalization research. Digitalization as a phenomenon transforms our society in a fast pace that only keeps accelerating. The impacts of digitalization stretch out to different business sections regardless of industry lines, which opens endless opportunities and, on the other hand, challenges in pursuing them. The purpose of the research has been our will to profoundly understand the change happening in our customers’ industries, in order to be an even better and more proactive legal partner for them.

The Finnish Social and Health Care Reform and State Aid – what is it all about?

The debated Finnish Social and Health Care Reform, nationally referred to as SOTE, has recently taken a new turn of events. The Finnish Constitutional Law Committee has in June stated that there has been a lack of consideration regarding the compatibility between the planned freedom of choice model and the EU State Aid regulation. This has followed by discussion on whether the Finnish Government should report the freedom of choice model to the Commission for review, or in other words, make a state aid notification.

Law as business support – not a thorn in its side

The decision-makers at the heart of the business have come up with an exciting business idea and, in their enthusiasm, are starting to plan how to take the new product concept or service model forward. Contracts around the idea have already been drafted. Just before launching the new concept, someone wonders whether the idea should be presented to a lawyer to check whether it is necessary to take into account some legal point of view. The lawyer questions the legality of the project and lists a slew of reasons and risks that either prevent or at least significantly impede the execution of the project. Why on earth did the lawyer not want to have such a wonderful idea take flight?

The use of variable-hour contracts is being limited

Variable working time contracts are often referred to as zero-hour contracts. On 4 May, Parliament approved laws that limit the working-time arrangements of variable-hour contracts. The most important changes for the employer concern the Employment Contracts Act, the Working Hours Act, and the Act on Occupational Safety and Health Enforcement and Cooperation on Occupational Safety and Health at Workplaces. The laws will come into force on 1 June 2018.
